Moisture measurement is both the starting point and the completion certificate of drying works. The only correct answer to the question "Is it dry?" is measurement. Decisions made by touching the surface, checking the color, or counting elapsed time are the most common cause of coating damage.
What do we measure?
- Ambient humidity: Relative humidity and temperature; also condensation risk via dew point calculation.
- Screed and concrete moisture: Residual moisture determination before coating; CM method and electronic measurement.
- Wall and plaster moisture: Determining the boundaries and depth of the wet area.
- Wood moisture: Equilibrium moisture control in parquet, joinery, and wooden load-bearing elements.
- Thermal imaging: Detection of thermal bridges, wet area boundaries, and hidden leaks.
Non-destructive and destructive measurement
Electronic moisture meters produce a rapid distribution map through surface contact without damaging the material — ideal for scanning a wide area and locating suspicious spots. However, the official value that determines the coating decision requires CM measurement: a sample is taken from the material and the residual moisture ratio is determined precisely. The correct approach is to use both together; first scanning, then precise measurement at critical points.
Reporting
Each measurement is recorded together with the date, time, measurement point, method used, and the reading obtained. In the delivered report, measurement points are marked on the plan, ambient conditions are specified, and a result assessment is provided. This report serves as valid documentation for the coating applicator, the client, the insurance assessor, and the building inspection authority.
When should measurement be performed?
Moisture measurement is the first step before coating application, in damage assessment after water damage, in monitoring the drying process, in final inspection before handover, and in identifying the cause of recurring mold complaints.
